The Gospel of John: A Review of the Movie

The adaptation of the highlight events in the whole human history, which are the ministry of Jesus Christ and his Atonement, into a movie, The Book of John: The Film, was commendable. I felt like I was truly part of their civilization and the movie made me question how strong my faith in Savior really is. I imagined myself being transported into their time and really asked myself if had I been part of the people whose history were recorded in the Bible, would I prove to my God that I am truly faithful in Him and to whoever He sends to speak in behalf of Him. I still couldn’t escape the fear of the possibility that I could have also faltered and insisted on having His Only Begotten Son crucified. The whole story centered on the myriad miracles that Jesus has done for all mankind especially causing the lame to walk, the blind to see and the dead to rise. Many times did Jesus testify of the veracity of His words and that those weren’t His but that of His Father in Heaven. However, the people with man-appointed authority chose to persecute him, especially the Pharisees because of their fear to lose their power.

John the Baptist knew that his mission was to prepare for the coming of the Messiah and to testify of Him whom the Father is well pleased. I like it when he accepted that when compared to that of the Savior, his role would be nothing. I would like to take it from him, that we must have an attitude of accepting the fact that there is a greater Power than we have and that there’s Someone who knows us more than we know ourselves, our strengths and weaknesses. John was a superb example of someone who relies neither on his own understanding nor his capabilities. The movie helped me to clearly understand that John wasn’t really jealous of Jesus contrary to the principle taught to me on one of our seminars in Core Values Formation seminar. This only shows that no matter how small our roles maybe, a whole wouldn’t be perfect without a piece of us. Whatever is insufficient in the eyes of man can be made whole and complete in the eyes of God.

The Saviour has always strive to gather us like a hen would gather his chicks but we were always on our own little priorities making it really hard for Him to penetrate in our minds and hearts. I also liked it when the Savior repeatedly showed compassion for the afflicted, women and children. The Savior died that we may all live through following His teachings. The Lord also gave a perfect example of how the teacher/master should serve his servants. When he was being crucified, I remembered that he suffered for all my sins that I may have the chance to get back to my Heavenly Father’s presence. I also realized that we are not in-tuned with the Holy Spirit, we would not understand his teachings and would fail in our goal to get back to our Father in Heaven. The Lord also helped me realize how important it is to honor the day of the Sabbath not with slothful activities but with activities that would result into productive works. It was also ironic that the people only believe in olden and dead prophets but very little support are given to those who are currently living. Many who claimed that they are descendants of Abraham do not actually follow his teachings. We’re fond of patronizing those we already died like Moses, Jacob, Abrahan and why is it so hard for us to accept the living prophet.

My love and respect for my Savior was intensified and supported by the said movie.The Lord does not leave us helpless not for a moment even if He was with our Father, He let the Holy Spirit dwell with man so that our spiritual would be able to understand the things of God. It is always good to be reminded and be refreshed from time to time of the sacrifice of our dear Savior for all mankind so that we may be reminded that true salvation is a gift for all who repent of their sins and the Atonement could only be effective to those who do their share of the sacrifice and that is not to sin again. Our God has a perfect plan wherein the Savior volunteered to be the Mediator because He is the only Begotten Son whose sacrifice would be sufficient to pay for the demands of justice. I felt the love of them both as I see the Savior gave up His spirit and suffered all the bitterness of the sins of the world. He didn’t ask us to die for Him but to live for Him.
